Concussion Facts

With all of the news and movies about concussions we wanted to give you some facts that will help assure that our organization is doing everything possible to assure the safety of all players, also there is a lot of myths out there.  The ThunderHawk organization is and has always implemented Heads Up football techniques EVEN BEFORE they where mandatory.

 * If movies and news stories bring more awareness to concussions, it's another opportunity for us to share how much football has changed for the better, especially in recent years.

 * Football taught and played today is not the same as it was 10 or even five years ago.

 * While the medical community continues to research and learn more about head injuries and CTE for the good of all sports, we will continue to be proactive with medically endorsed and innovative programs keeping football fun, making it better and continually improve on what we're doing.

 * Numerous recent studies, including 2015 publications by the American Academy of Neurology, note that any relationship between head trauma and later life neurodegenerative disease is probably multi-factoral and much more research will help us understand all the contributors to these types of problems.

* The number of concussions does not appear to correlate with the development of CTE, and much more research is needed regarding the role subconcussive blows and later life development of neurodegenerative disease, especially in youth sports.

 * USA Football is the sport's national governing body and recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

 * USA Football's Heads Up Football program is a comprehensive approach to teach and play our sport. It includes coaching education, equipment fitting, tackling/blocking fundamentals, CDC-approved concussion recognition/response, sudden cardiac arrest protocols and heat preparedness/hydration.

 * The medical community agrees that education and coaching standards are vital for every sport that our kids play. We're seeing changes for the better in football.

 * Independent, peer-reviewed research found that during the course of the 2014 season, young football players in leagues that registered for Heads Up Football had a 76 percent reduction in injuries compared to those playing in leagues that did not take part in the program.

 * Leagues that adopted Heads Up Football also had a 34 percent reduction in concussions during practices and a 29 percent reduction of concussions during games throughout the season.

 * Since employing Heads Up Football's curriculum at high schools and hands-on training, football injuries are down 16 percent, and concussions have dropped by 28 percent across the all high school football programs. School officials credit Heads Up Football as a driving force for student-athlete safety.

 * Heads Up Football is endorsed by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the Korey Stringer Institute and more than three dozen other leading organizations across medicine, sport and child advocacy.

 * More than 1,100 high schools and approximately 6,500 youth leagues registered for our Heads Up Football in 2015. This equates to nearly 70 percent of all U.S. youth football leagues.

 * Science and research shows that medically endorsed standards established through USA Football's Heads Up Football program since 2013 are making a positive difference and there's more to be done.
